SHILLONG: City police have issued an advisory asking people to remain cautious against a criminal gang which has re-surfaced in the city.

East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang on Wednesday informed that a criminal gang which was active in the city a couple of years ago has re-surfaced.

It is learnt that the modus operandi of the gang is to target people exiting from banks after withdrawing money.

“They would throw some irritants or dirt on the person while another member of the gang would tell the target that something is sticking on his clothes. When the person would get busy cleaning his clothes, another person would snatch away the bag containing the money,” Kharkrang said.

Another method adopted by them is to drop money on the ground and tell the would-be victim that his/ her money has dropped and when he/ she was busy collecting the dropped money another person would snatch away the money bag.

Police have cautioned the public especially those coming out of banks after withdrawing money not to let go of their bag if anyone tries to distract them.
