AIGU demands inclusion of Garo in 8th schedule

SHILLONG: The All India Garo Union (AIGU) has asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to examine the consider the inclusion of Garo language in the Eighth schedule of the constitution.

In a memorandum submitted to Sangma, AIGU president Elbarth Marak said that there are currently 22 languages included in the Eighth schedule and there is a demand for inclusion of another 38 languages under it.

The demand from AIGU came following the Consensus in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly over inclusion of Khasi language in Eighth Schedule

The Chief Minister has proposed the setting up of a Committee to expeditiously move the Union Government to complete the process of setting up of uniform criteria to pave the way for inclusion of any language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

The Chief Minister suggested that initially a five-member Committee, including members from both ruling and opposition members of the Khasi Author Society (KAS), Sahitya Akademi and other academicians could be notified.
