SHILLONG: The closing function of the year long silver jubilee celebration of Khasi daily newspaper Mawphor came to an end at the function held at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong on Saturday, where Meghalaya Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma graced the occasion

In his speech, Mukul Sangma said that it is definitely a privilege to complete 25 years. The 25 long years of connecting people and transforming the society needs to be acknowledged even as he congratulated the dedicated and loyal readers of Mawphor who in turn have been instrumental in motivating their friends for associating with the daily.

“If you have a bigger number of readers dedicated to read newspaper, the members associated with print media gets more motivated and that also is responsible for sustainability of survival of media houses,” he said while adding that well informed and enlightened individual of the society make a well informed and enlightened society which is very crucial for democracy.

“The Government and the media, we are inseparable in our endeavour to ensure that we have a society which is well informed, alert, vigilant and therefore capable of contributing positively in the growth and developmental process of the State”, added Dr. Sangma.

He further asserted that credibility of news that media houses publish becomes very important, adding that it requires a lot of hardwork and commitment from those who collect, compile and reproduce them in an appropriate manner, insulating it from any kind of controversies which basically gives the credibility to the paper.

Sangma also released the souvenir of Mawphor and also handed over the Mawphor-Lafarge Excellence Award for Development of Media to P Sohklet, Joint Editor, Mawphor, V Nongsiej, Editor, Kynjatshai, D L Siangshai, Editor, Mawphor and John W Thabah, Editor, Highland Post, and Resident Editor Eastern Chronicle David Laitphlang.

The other awardees included SS Syiem, Editor Peitngor, Tilak Rai, Editor Oh  Meghalaya, MS Syiemlieh, Mawphor, Lambok Thabah, Editor, Nongsain Hima, Gershome Hat, Reporter, Peitngor, K Nongsiej, Dongmusa, Sanjib Bhattacharjee, photo journalist, The Shillong Times, Ashwini Das, The Shillong Times, Walton Jyrwa, photo journalist, UB Photos, Sanath Chakraborty, Grassroot Options, Raymond Kharmujai, UNI, Rajoo Sharma TNT, and a special award for fearlessly discharging duty was given to Markus Lyngdoh  of T7.
