SHILLONG: At a time when road accidents are ever increasing in Shillong, one cause seems to the use of wrong signals by the drivers which often leads to accidents.

The number of road accidents can be minimized if signals are used properly, according to instructors.

The owner cum instructor Doone Driving Jonathan Doone Dunai says that there is a tendency among people to put on right side indicator when they are about to park their vehicles on the left side of the road.

“Many drivers signal in this way which is very confusing and it often leads to accidents,” he said.

Another wrong signal which is commonly used in Shillong is that the divers instead of putting hazard lights, put the right indicator while their vehicles are parked on the road side.

Going by the number of road accidents in the city, it has become imperative for the vehicles to properly use the signal which would avoid an accident as many accidents take place in congested and narrow Shillong road. Several driving schools have come up in the city in last few years where driving lessons are provided to people who want to learn driving.

Reacting to a query, Dunai does not agree with the perception that women are bad drivers but infact he says that women are more cautious drivers than their counterparts.

He says that now more and more people of all ages are joining the driving classes since this has become an era where everyone wants to drive a vehicle but Dunai ensures that the beginners at first are taught defensive driving before they become professional.

“People need to drive vehicles with sense of responsibility and attitude,” he said.
