Golfer Spieth wins Australian Open title

Sydney: Jordan Spieth Sunday became the first American to win the Australian Open golf title since 1993. Spieth fired eight-under 63 in the fourth and final round to earn a total of 13-under 271, beating Australian Rod Pampling by six strokes into second place at the Australian Golf Club, reports Xinhua. Home golfer Brett Rumford came third with 278.

Beckham, eldest son involved in car crash

London: Retired English footballer David Beckham and his eldest son Brooklyn were involved in a car crash, local reports said. The Independent said Sunday, the accident occurred after the former England captain picked up his 15-year-old son from a football match outside Arsenal’s training ground in Hertfordshire Saturday, reports Xinhua. Beckham and his son were left “shaken” but unhurt after the accident, while two passengers in the other vehicle were also uninjured. Reports said the air bags in Beckham’s car were deployed successfully, but their Audi car was rendered unusable and damaged on the driver’s side.

Air India, Army XI reach Beighton Cup semis

Kolkata: Formidable Air India and defending champions Army XI won in contrasting styles to sail into the semi final of the 19th All India Beighton Cup hockey tournament here Saturday. While Air India routed Canara Bank 6-1, Army XI went past All India CAG 2-0 in pool A quarter final league encounters at the SAI Sports Complex. After two matches, Air India and Army XI have logged six points, while the two other sides in the group Canara Bank and All India CAG are yet to open their account. In the first match after a goalless first half, Army XI struck at the 51st minute mark when Pawal Lakra scored the opening goal followed by a Siraju A.D. strike six minutes before time from a penalty corner.
