MAWKYRWAT: With the State Government not responding to the demand to place the Rs.27 crore road project from Weiloi to Rangblang in the ‘priority list’ of the NLCPR, which was scrapped by the NLCPR Committee on October 13, 2013, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) South West Khasi Hills on Monday announced a fresh series of agitation.

The KSU South West Khasi Hills will enforce night road blockade on December 4 and 5 from 7 PM to 5 AM in the whole of South West Khasi Hills District and Mawsynram Block of East Khasi Hills District. This will be followed by a 24-hour bandh which will be announced after the end of the night road blockade.

“We have decided to continue with our agitation since there has been no response from the State Government to our demand to restore the Rs.27 crore road project from Weiloi to Rangblang which was scrapped by the NLCPR Committee last year,” KSU South West Khasi Hills general secretary Forwardman Nongrem said.

The KSU has also warned that they will intensify their agitation if the government remains silent on the issue.

“The Union has also decided to call a 24-hour bandh in the district and in Mawsynram Block of East Khasi Hills if the state government keeps silent on the issue, the date for which will soon be announced,” the KSU leader said.

The KSU also criticized the local legislator and Deputy Chief Minister, Rowell Lyngdoh, for not fighting for the issue of the people of the region.

“As a responsible legislator and representative of the people of the region, the Deputy Chief Minister should not keep silent on the issue,” Nongrem said.
