Stray dogs in city to be vaccinated, sterilized

SHILLONG: Fearing the spread of rabies due to the alarming number of stray dogs in parts of city, the Government has decided to catch such dogs and vaccinate them.

“There are reports of spread of rabies among the stray dogs, and to check this and also to prevent the spread of rabies among humans once the affected dogs bite people, we have decided to catch the stray dogs and vaccinate them and leave them from the place where they are caught,” said P. Naik, Principal Secretary in charge Urban Municipal administration.

According to Naik, the process of vaccination will start likely from Friday.

At present, the urban and municipal administration has two dog catchers and they will start the work from Mawkhar, he said.

The official said sterilization of stray dogs will also be carried out soon to reduce the dog population in city.

The issue of menace of stray dogs was discussed in the just concluded winter session of the State Legislative Assembly.

“We have decided to follow up on the discussions held in the Assembly,” Naik said.
