NONGPOH: Following the frequent atrocities being meted by the people of Raid Nongrung in Ri Bhoi District and the recently threat against the Umtlieh village Rangbah Shnong from the Karbi militants, the KSU Central Body on Thursday strongly denounced the barbaric act of the militants.
It may be mentioned here that the Karbi’s militants identified as the Karbi People Liberation Tiger (KPLT) in the month of November created a sense of insecurity among the Khasi community living in the border areas of Assam and Meghalaya of the Raid Nongtung after they started demanding percentage from the agriculture produces of the Khasi Communit.
The militant group also threatened dire consequences against the local Headman of Umtlieh village and his family if the percentage is not paid by the villagers.
As informed by the local villagers and elders’ villagers, the Karbi’s militants has also demanded percentage from the central sponsored scheme – National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (NREGS) which is implemented in the village.
The KSU also informed that the Khasi Community had also faced the tense situation after the Hamren District Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong had forced them to enroll for EPIC from Assam, which falls under the violation of Election Commission of India which bars a person from having a dual vote in more than one place in the same constituency or in more than one constituency.
Reacting on such atrocities being meted by the people of the district, the KSU leaders led by its President Daniel Khyriem, NKHD president Ferdinald Kharkamni along with their office bearer met the people of Raid Nongtung on Thursday and also held a public meeting to defuse such tense among the Khasi Community living in disputed border of Meghalaya and Assam.
During the meeting, they urged the Nepali Community not to intrude into the land belonging to the Khasi Community following the recent intrusion of one Nepali into the land of Drosila Nongpluh at Khlieh Umwang.
Speaking to this Reporter, Khyriem while condemning the barbaric act of the KPLT also said that the union strongly demanded the Karbi militants to stop their inhuman act against the Khasi Community and said that if the extortion and torture against the Khasi community continues, the KSU will not hesitate to take similar action against the Karbi community living in Meghalaya.
