Boy beaten up on charges of ‘spying’

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Commission for Protection of Child Rights have take serious note of the attack on a 16 year-old boy from a village in Pynursla and decided to visit the village to conduct a post investigation.

The Chairperson of the Commission, Meena Kharkongor informed on Saturday that she will visit the area on Monday to assess the ground reality.

The relatives had approached the Commission on Friday when the sixteen-year-old youth from Umñiuh Tmar village near Pynursla was severely injured after he was allegedly assaulted by the members of the village Dorbar on the accusations that he was spying for BSF and Bangladeshis.

However, the BSF on Saturday denied assigning anyone to be the spy of the force.

As per the relatives, the youth was allegedly assaulted on December 2 after the secretary of the village dorbar issued a summon notice asking him to report to the community hall of the village at 4 pm.

According to them, the notice did not mentioned the reason why he was summoned adding that it only stated that he should report before the member of the village dorbar without failure.

However, a senior BSF official said that the BSF does not have any such spies, as they have their internal setup.

The official said that anyone is free to provide information on any matter concerning national security and this does not mean that the BSF has deployed the spies in the border.

“There can be some other motive behind the assault of the boy,”the official added.

Earlier, as per the directive of the Village Dorbar, the uncle of the victim, B Khongthah informed that his nephew went to the community hall after he was summoned.

“Without uttering a word, the members of the village dorbar around seven of them immediately started assaulting him and even took off

his clothes,” he said adding that his nephew was severely injured since they had used bamboo stickd to assault him.

According to the uncle, they had also locked his nephew inside the toilet for many hours after the assault.

Later, he said that the members of the village dorbar accused his nephew to be a spy of the BSF and the Bangladeshis.

Khongthah said that they are still clueless on what basis they have accused him to be a spy.

Meanwhile, the relatives have filed an FIR at Pynursla police station against the members of the village dorbar Rostan Mawkhlieng – \Krapsing Diengdoh , Iatur Diengdoh, Roket Shabong, who who is the secretary of the village dorbar, Joksing Khongshei  and Ham Diengdoh for allegedly assaulting the victim.

The relatives on Friday also lodged a complaint with East Khasi SP M Kharkrang. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Shillong Civil Hospital.
