SHILLONG: With the ban of coal mining coupled with the dwindling business, there is a spurt in smuggling of ganja and phensedyl to Bangladesh.
Acting on specific information, the Customs Preventive Unit, Shillong had on Thursday seized 45600 bottles of Phensedyl cough linctus valued at Rs. 54 lakhs which was concealed under crockeries from a 12 wheeler Tata truck (HR-63 A 6776) near Shillong.
One person was arrested in this connection.
Last month, the same unit had seized another consignment of 24,000 bottles of phensedyl valued at Rs 35 lakh, and one person was arrested.All the consignments were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
In another case on Friday the Anti-Smuggling Unit of Guwahati Customs Division has seized two trucks (HR. 65 7758 and HR 65 8403) along with 1100 kgs of Ganja concealed under 16,800 kgs of tea leaves valued at Rs 1.23 crore. Two persons have been arrested in this connection.
