Rise of substance abuse in rural areas

SHILLONG: Concerns have been raised over children getting addicted to the use of alcohol and tobacco in villages.

In this context, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Shillong conducted an awareness programme on drugs, alcohol and tobacco abuse at Mawphu village on Friday.

Large number of people attended the programe. K Pumi, and M Mukhim from Mawsahew PHC urged the people to refrain themselves from the habit of consuming alcohol, drugs and tobacco underscoring the growing trend that a large number of children in rural areas are falling prey to alcohol and tobacco.

Mukhim also urged parents to monitor the movement of the children to check the food they children consume so that they can be protected.
