NONGPOH: In an exemplary implementation of Central Government schemes, the people of Nongbah Myrdon village in Ri Bhoi District put their hands and minds together to come up with an Aqua Park that will be promoted as a tourist attraction in the district.

The construction of the Aqua Park was possible with the convergence of MGNREGS and Fishery scheme at a total cost of Rs.9 lakh.

The Aqua Park is the second innovative venture undertaken by the villagers under the leadership of Rangbah Shnong Bipul Thangkhiew after the Rural Technology Park, foundation stone for which was laid last month. The village tied up with the government by generously donating a large plot of land for construction of the Technology Park.

On Thursday the Aqua Park was inaugurated by Principal Secretary in charge Agriculture and Sericulture, P.S. Kharkongor, in the presence of Principal Secretary, C&RD and Fishery, K.N. Kumar, Rangbah Shnong Bipul Thangkhiew, SIRD Director T. Lyngwa, SIRD Deputy Director B. Rumnong, Fishery Director I.R. Marak, DRDA Project Director D. Hynniewta, BDO, Umsning C&RD Block, P. Khonglah, besides other government official and the local residents.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar informed that the village was recently accorded recognition by the Central Government under the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), courtesy of Rajya Sabha member from Punjab, K.T.S. Tulsi, and this was possible due to the mutual understanding and cooperation between the villagers and the government.

Speaking as the chief guest, Kharkongor expressed his appreciation to the villagers for setting up an example for other villages to emulate.

He also said that the Aqua Park, which will house a number of fishing ponds, will attract tourists and in turn generate income for the local residents.
