Two gangrape accused nabbed from police exam centres
Muzaffarnagar:Two persons, who were allegedly involved in gangrape cases during Muzaffarnagar riots, were arrested from police recruitment centres in Moradabad while appearing for an exam. The two accused, Gaurav and Amardeep, were arrested yesterday while appearing for a written exam at the police recruitment centres, said SP (Rural) Alok Priyadarshi. Reportedly the accused had already appeared for their physical tests before they were arrested, he added. The duo, who were produced in a court today, have been sent to judicial custody till December 23. According to SIT sources, attachment proceedings against the two have been initiated by court in connection with the cases. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the riots had found the involvement of 25 people in six gangrape cases out of which 24 accused have been arrested. One last accused is still absconding in connection with the case. (PTI)
Fire at railway quarters in Mumbai, some injured
Mumbai:A major fire has broken out in a 21-storey residential building near Mumbai Central railway station in south Mumbai, fire officials said. An unspecified number of people who are reported to have been injured in the blaze have been admitted to Nair hospital and no casualty has been reported so far, a civic official said. The fire started on the 4th floor of railway officers’ quarters behind Maratha Mandir theatre opposite Mumbai Central railway station, an official said, adding, apparently it was caused by a short-circuit. “We got a call around noon that a fire broke out in a residential building. We initially thought it was a Grade-1 fire and sent four fire tankers to the spot. It was later upgraded to a Grade-2 fire and we have now deployed eight fire engines and five water tankers at the spot,” a fire brigade official told PTI. The fire which has gutted the fourth floor is yet to be brought under control, he said.(PTI)
Four fishermen shot dead
Patna:Unidentified assailants shot dead four fishermen and injured another in a village here last midnight, a police officer said on Monday. The incident took place at Mungila village, located about 35 km from Patna, as armed assailants barged into houses of some fishermen and fired at random, killing four on the spot. Another received injuries, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jitendra Rana said. Rana, who is camping in the village since last night, said the incident appeared to be a fallout of dispute between the fishermen and assailants who had demanded fish for free from the fishermen earlier in the day. An FIR, naming the accused, has been lodged against seven persons in this connection, the SSP said, adding raids were being carried out to nab the accused persons. The victims have been identified as Janardan Bind (19),Manish Bind (25), Uday Bind (34)and Ram Pravesh Bind (60),Paliganj police station’s Station House Officer (SHO) Subodh Kumar said.(PTI)
Seven, including two children, killed in separate mishaps
Kadapa (AP):As many as seven persons, including two children, were killed in separate mishaps in the district, police said. A couple and their two children died on the spot near Narayana Reddi Palli village in Sambepalli mandal when their motorcycle was knocked down by a chartered bus enroute to Proddatur from Chittoor last evening, a sub-inspector at Sambepalli police station said. The deceased were identified as Surenaik (35), a teacher, his wife Sumathi (32) and their two children Susanth (8) and Soni (5), he said. In another accident, M Nagaraju was killed when his motorcycle rammed into a bullock cart near Veeraballi mandal yesterday, Rayachoty rural circle inspector Prabhakar said. Besides, a person, identified as Chintakunta Dastigiri, died after getting electrocuted when he was trying to light a bulb at his house in the district’s Duvvur mandal yesterday, a police officer said.(PTI)
Jaundice kills 13 in Odisha town
Bhubaneswar:Jaundice has killed 13 people in Odisha’s Sambalpur town and its adjoining area since May and infected nearly 1,100 others, an official said on Monday. The administration has stopped supplying drinking water through pipelines over fear that sewage may have seeped into the drinking water as new patients continue to pour into the hospitals and private clinics in the area.”So far, 13 people have died of jaundice,” chief district medical officer J.K. Samantaray told IANS. Most of those affected have been treated and cured. Only ten jaundice patients are currently undergoing treatment at the local government hospital, he added.The district headquarters town of Sambalpur, about 320 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, has a population of nearly two lakh which is being supplied safe drinking water through tankers after the outbreak of water-borne disease, he said.(IANS)
