SHILLONG: Not much has changed in the safety scenario for the visitors to Ward’s Lake since the November crackdown by Police on youngsters creating nuisance in the lake campus.

The police drive has failed to change much in the vicinity which is still witness to drunken antics by groups of youngsters who apparently derive immense joy from teasing couples and people around.

It has been learnt that recently three to four youths were found drinking openly inside the Ward’s Lake and creating nuisance even as they gestured indecently towards some couples who were forced to leave the lake shortly.

The group created nuisance for almost half an hour and was finally chased off by the staff of the lake.

A favourite destination for city residents and tourists, the repeated instances of improper behaviour in public in the lake, threatens to create insecurity in the minds of the visitors.

Several visitors felt that the Ward’s Lake should employ security guards to keep a check on anti social elements inside the lake premises. They also felt that those entering the lake should be checked thoroughly to ensure that liquor is not carried inside the lake premises.

It may be mentioned that on November 19, the city police had picked up 46 students, including five girls, from Ward’s Lake and other parts of the city after they were found drinking inside the Lake campus. Shockingly, among those some were school students who were found drinking in school uniform.
