SHILLONG: Paying tributes to legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah here on Tuesday, KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum wondered how many youths of the current generation will be able to follow the footsteps of the champion of freedom who gave up his life defending the traditional rights and practices of the indigenous people.

“While many claimed themselves to be the leaders of the Khun Hynniewtrep, not many have the heart like the legendary freedom fighter,” Nongrum said after unveiling the life size statue of legendary freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah near the office of the PWD Central Division, Barik Point.

“We need leaders who can really safeguard and protect the interests of the Khun Hynniewtrep. We are at the time of hardships where outside forces are trying to destabilise us,” the KHADC CEM added.

Meanwhile, NESO chairman Samuel Jyrwa said that the struggle of the Khun Hynniewtrep to fight for its survival still continues.

While recalling that U Kiang Nangbah had to wage war against the British to protect the roots and culture of the Khasi community, he said that the situation has not changed as at present the locals have to fight to ensure that they do not become minority in their own land.

The life-size statue of U Kiang Nangbah has been erected by the KSU to commemorate its 36th anniversary. Others who spoke on the occasion include KSU president Daniel Khyriem, Khasi research scholar KP Phawa and Riti Academy member Raphael Warjri who built the life-size statue. Earlier, KHNAM youth wing also organized an awareness programme at Jaiaw Parking Lot, Motphran to commemorate the death anniversary of U Kiang Nangbah.
