2014 will be remembered as the year of turmoil where series of violence, killings of the innocents by Garo millitants shattered peace and tranquility in the State. The year will also be remembered as the year of political stability unlike the past though it was marked by series of violence and agitations. The law and order situation in Garo Hills worsened compared to the past years. Killing of people in the name of witch hunt and death of coal labourers in coal mines in the absence of safety measures marred the year.

January

4. Tura cop Bankerlang Kharshohnoh placed under suspension and two probationary police officers Ronald Nongrum and Sylvester Chyne face termination of service over attempted rape of minor.

– In a bizarre incident a woman, Buris Lyngdoh was tied behind a truck and dragged on the road at Madanryting on the night of January 3.

9. Government extends term of three district councils; Garo Hills Autonomous district Council (GHADC) by six months and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) by another fifteen days.
