44 Naxals held in Chhattisgarh in two days

Raipur:In a major combing operation, 44 Naxals have been arrested from different places in the insurgency-hit Bijapur district in Chhattisgarh over the past two days, police said on Wednesday. The arrested Naxals, against whom warrants were long pending, were involved in several Maoist-related incidents including loot, arson, murder, attacks on security personnel, triggering bomb blasts and destroying government properties, Bijapur Superintendent of Police K L Dhruv told PTI. Most of the ultras carried cash rewards on their heads, the SP said, adding that after reviewing the arrest warrants issued against them in several Naxal-related incidents, a strategy was chalked out to nab them. Following inputs about the locations of these cadres, police teams were mobilised in different restive pockets of the district, located around 400 km away from the state capital Raipur, the SP said. “While 37 ultras were arrested yesterday, seven others were nabbed on Wednesday,” Dhruv said, adding that process is underway to produce them in a local court. Of the arrested, Hemla Lekhu (30) and Raju Tati (26) were involved in attacks on security forces during Lok Sabha polls this year, the SP said.(PTI)

Man held with gold worth Rs 77 lakh at airport

New Delhi: A man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold bars valuing about Rs 77 lakh at the international airport here.The accused was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Riyadh On Tuesday. “On detailed exami-nation of his baggage and personal search, 26 pieces of gold bars total weighing about three kgs were recovered,” a press release issued today by the customs said.The passenger was arrested and gold recovered from his was seized, it said.The value of the seized gold bars is assessed to be Rs 76.68 lakh, the release said. Nurse, friend sustain acid attack by bike-borne assailants

Namakkal (TN):Two persons, including a nurse, suffered serious burn injuries after two unidentified bike-borne assailants threw acid on them, police said today. 50-year-old Vijayakumari, a nurse at a government primary health centre here, took lift from her friend on a motorbike on Tuesday night, Superintendent of Police Senthilkumar said. Upon reaching her quarters, the assailants threw acid on them and fled from the scene. Vijayakumari sustained burns on both eyes. Her friend suffered burn injuries on a shoulder, police said. They were rushed to a Government hospital here by the local people. The motive behind the attack is unknown, he said, adding special teams have been formed to nab the culprits, Senthilkumar said. Two killed, another hurt in road accident

Aurangabad:Two persons were killed and another injured on Wednesday in a collision between a speeding truck and a Bolero Jeep on the GT road under Barun police station area in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, a police officer said. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Ajay Narayan Yadav said that a Bolero Jeep with three occupants collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from opposite direction due to poor visibility. While two occupants of the ill-fated Bolero Jeep died on the spot, another sustained injuries, he said, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem and the injured man admitted to Anugrah Narayan Medical College at Gaya for treatment. Efforts were on to ascertain the identity of the victims and the injured man, the SDPO said, adding all three hailed Jharkhand according to preliminary information. (PTI)

One killed after chemical-laden container catches fire

Thane:One person was charred to death and three others were injured when three containers loaded with highly-inflammable chemicals caught fire after a freak collision on the Atlanta-Mumbra bypass road here, officials said on Wednesday. The incident took place last night disrupting traffic on the bypass till early morning, Disaster Management Cell Chief, Santosh Kadam of the TMC said. Two Thane-bound containers collided with another coming from the opposite side (Panvel) resulting in a huge explosion leaving one dead, Divisional Fire Officer RG Pardeshi said. Three others who sustained burn wounds have been admitted to Kalshekar Hospital at Mumbra. The flames have been put off but the deceased has not been identified yet as he was charred beyond recognition, police and firemen said. (PTI)
