New monkey species found in Amazon rainforests

WASHINGTON: A new monkey species with unique calico colouring has been spotted in the Amazon rainforest.

Due to deforestation in the region, the new monkey species, believed to be belonging to the Pithecia genus, is already endangered, the researchers suggested.

The new saki Saki monkey (any primate member of the Pithecia genus) was spotted on three separate occasions in a part of the Amazon rain forest, according to a new study from the University of Mato Grosso in Brazil.

“We sent the first pictures to an expert, but everything suggests that it is a new species. The characteristics are very different,” biologist Manoel dos Santos Filho was quoted as telling Brazilian news agency G1 Globo.

These animals live in rainforests ranging across South America from South Colombia to Central Brazil, Nature World News reported.

They can reach up to 50 centimeters long and weigh about 4.4 pounds.

This species is very elusive in nature and they rarely leave the trees that they live in. (IANS)

Woman fined for defaming husband on Facebook

Sydney: A court here has directed a woman to pay $12,500 to her estranged husband after she defamed him on Facebook by accusing him of “domestic violence”.

The December 12 Facebook post read that Robyn Greeuw had “separated from Miro Dabrowski after 18 years of suffering domestic violence and abuse”, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The judge at West Australian District Court ruled in school teacher Dabrowski’s favour, saying that Greeuw had not proved the comments were true.

“Domestic violence and abuse by its very nature usually (occurs) in the matrimonial home and in the absence of independent witnesses, it was possible to make defamation findings solely on the evidence of one partner against the other,” the judge said.

However, he said that in this case, Greeuw was not a credible witness and was “prepared to say or write whatever she thinks will suit her case”.

The judge, however, found that some parts of Dabrowski’s evidence also “lacked credibility” but after looking at the overall evidence, decided to rule in his favour, the report added. (IANS)

Tokyo: A South Korean man drowned early Thursday when 60 people jumped into a river celebrating the New Year in Osaka in Japan, police said.

More than 6,000 people gathered around the Dotonbori area in downtown Osaka to celebrate the New Year.

Shortly after midnight, about 60 men and women jumped into the river from a bridge, Xinhua said.

Most climbed onto the shore soon by themselves but a young man was rescued and died hours later in hospital.

The 18-year-old had a South Korean passport. (IANS)
