Assam situation improves; NIA boss to oversee probe

Guwahati:NIA Director Sharad Kumar on Tuesday arrived in Assam to oversee the investigations into the NDFB(S) carnage even as the situation continued to improve with no incidents reported in the last 10 days.
The security forces deployed in the vulnerable areas continued their vigil in addition to stepping up operation against the mili-tants. Two NDFB(S) militan-ts were apprehended in Banshijhora, under Parbhat-jhora subdivision in Kokra-jhar district on tuesday.
One 9 mm pistol, one 7.62 mm pistol and live ammunition for both the weapons and several mobile phones were recovered from them. The NIA director arrived in Guwahati to take stock of progress of investigations into the four cases that the NIA has taken up in connection with the NDFB(S) carnage.
Mr Kumar is scheduled to attend a series of meetings during his stay in the state, NIA sources said.
He will be meeting Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi this evening and also top police officials.Kumar will be visiting the villages that came under NDFB(S) attacks in Dhekiajuli and Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur district and in Kokrajhar district.
A total of 128 police cases have been registered so far in connection with the carnage and 83 arrests made.The number of camp inmates has decreased following improved security arrangements in the vulne-rable areas.District officials of Kokrajhar have today proceeded to Alipurduar district of West Bengal to bring the displaced people taking shelter in two relief camps there.(UNI)
