12-hr Bandh paralyses normal life in Central Assam

Guwahati: Normal life was paralysed in three Central Assam districts today following a 12-hour bandh called by two organisations.
All schools, educational and financial institutions remained closed while vehicles remained off the roads, including the National Highway 37, in the three districts of Morigaon, parts of Kamrup (Metro) and Nagaon districts since the shutdown began at 5 am, official sources said.
The bandh has been called by All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) and Tiwa Yuba Chatra Parishad demanding the creation of separate Tiwa Autonomous Council, under the provi-sion of the sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
Tiwa is an ethnic group inhabiting in the region.
Work at Hindustan Paper Mill in Jagiroad, however, was not affected with CISF providing security.
Security in the three districts have been tightened by deploying additional forces in the sensitive areas. (PTI)
