Two KPLT militants killed in encounter, UPLA ultra arrested

Diphu:Two KPLT militants were killed in an encounter with security forces and a UPLA extremist arrested with arms in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Thursday, said a police officer. Two of a five-member group of Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT) insurgents were killed in an encounter with a joint police and army team at Rongtang village under Dolamora police station, said district Superintendent of Police Mukdhya Jyoti Mahanta. Two 7.65 mm pistols, a revolver, ammunition and some extortion demand notes were recovered from the slain cadres, Mahanta said. United Peoples Liberation Army (UPLA) militant Asati Bey involved in the killing of Hamren police district Superintendent of Police Nityananda Goswami last year was arrested at a place under Bokolia police station, the SP said. A grenade with some extortion demand notes were also seized from him, he added. (PTI)

Explosives found in railway station

Guwahati:A huge quantity of gelatin sticks and cordex wires were recovered from an unclaimed bag by the GRPF in Guwahati Railway Station on Wednesday night on the eve of the 19th National Youth Festival beginning here On Friday. During routine patrolling the bag containing 106 gelatin sticks and six wire rolls was noticed in platform number three by the security personnel, said GRPF sources. (an official in the GRPF office in the railway station) To which militant outfit the explosives belonged or who was carrying them was not immediately known as investigations were on, the sources said. Security measures have been intensified in the railway stations and the city where nearly 5000 youths from across the country have congregate to showcase their talent in the field of art and culture at the Festival, police said. At the opening ceremony of the Festival, organised by the union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in collaboration with the state government, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is scheduled to be the chief guest and union youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will preside over the ceremony. Tripura to set up new varsity

Agartala:The Left Front government will set up a state university in Tripura and this will be taken up in the budget session of the assembly beginning Feb 16, a minister said here Thursday. “A bill to set up the university will be presented in the budget session of the Tripura assembly,” Education Minister Tapan Chakraborty told reporters. “After passing the bill in the assembly and obtaining the governor’s assent, it would be sent to union human resource development ministry and the University Grants Commission for their approval.” The budget session will last two weeks. The proposed university would be named after erstwhile Tripura ruler Maharaja Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur (1923-1947), who set up the state’s first degree college in Agartala in 1947. “The proposed university would further boost higher education in the state and would also attract students from Bangladesh and other northeastern states,” the minister said. Survey on drug issues in Pb, Manipur to be completed by June

New Delhi:An advanced pilot survey on issues related to drug abuse in Punjab and Manipur is expected to be completed by June this year, Social Justice Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot today said. The Minister told this during a meeting of Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment to discuss steps for prevention of alcoholism and substance (drugs) Abuse and Welfare of De-Notified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes here, a statement said. Stating that a working group has been constituted by the National Statistical Commission (NSC)to devise the modalities of advance pilot survey, he said that a survey work has been initiated in Punjab and Manipur as drug abuse is reported to be high in these states.(PTI)
