Mehta appointed new M’laya DGP

SHILLONG: Senior IPS office Rajiv Mehta has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) of Meghalaya.Mehta, an IPS officer from the 1981 batch of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is currently serving as the Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).Mehta replaces PJP Hanaman who retired on December 31.Confirming this, official sources informed that the State Government through the Home department formally issued a notification in this respect on Friday.

“The copy of the notification has also been sent to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs,” official sources added.When contacted, Mehta while speaking over telephone from Delhi said he was happy to be returning home. “I am looking forward to serving the people of Meghalaya in the capacity of DGP,” he said.The newly-appointed DGP said he was likely to assume charge in the third week of January after completing his unfinished task in the NCB.

He was an alumnus of St. Columba’s and St. Stephen’s College of Delhi. He had also taught for two years at Lawrence School, Sanawar, before joining the Indian Police Service and had also given his service in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) as an IG, as well as an advisor to the Indian mission in the European Economic Community in Brussels. It is noteworthy that the State Security Commission had empanelled five senior IPS officers from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre to select the new DGP of the State.Besides Mehta, others who had been empanelled by the security panel included DK Pathak (1979 batch), Rajendra Kumar (1980), Ramesh Tayal (1980) and SK Jain (1980).
