Islamabad: A former Pakistan Air Force chief technician, convicted for an assassination attempt on former president Pervez Musharraf, has been executed, a media report said on Saturday.
Khalid Mehmood was executed in Rawalpindi’s Central Jail on Friday night, Dawn online reported.
Mehmood was sentenced to death Oct 3, 2005, for his involvement in an assassination attempt on Musharraf Dec 14, 2003 in Rawalpindi.
The attack involved a powerful explosion targeting the former president’s motorcade as it was passing over a bridge in the garrison city.
The motorcade narrowly escaped the explosion and no one was injured.
Mehmood was shifted to the jail Oct 27, 2010.
According to an ARY News report, Khalid was the seventh to be executed out of the nine terrorists found guilty of trying to assassinate Musharraf.
Prior to hanging, the jail authorities arranged Khalid’s meeting with his family members.
His belongings were handed over to the family after the execution.
On Dec 17, Pakistan lifted a moratorium on death penalty in terror-related cases, following a terrorist attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar Dec 16, in which Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants massacred over 140 students and teachers.
Khalid was the 10th convict to be hanged since the moratorium was lifted. (IANS)
