CBI handed over probe into trust run by Khurshids: Minister
Farukhabad (UP): CBI has been handed over the probe into alleged irregularities by a trust run by Congress leader Salman Khurshid and his wife, according to Union minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot. “The probe into alleged discrepancies in holding camps for handicapped persons by the trust has been handed over to CBI. The officers of districts have said in Economic Offence Wing (EOW) probe that their signatures were forged,” the Minister for social justice and empowerment told reporters here on Monday. “Legal action will be taken against those found guilty,” he added. It was alleged that the Zakir Hussain Memorial Trust run by Khurshid and his wife Louise allegedly forged signatures to receive government grants for welfare of the disabled. Khurshid and his wife have denied the allegations. Gehlot said the Centre has decided to give scholarships to handicapped children and those belonging to scheduled castes. (PTI)
Undertrial’s body found hanging in hospital bathroom
Jalpaiguri(WB): The body of a 48-year-old undertrial was found hanging in the bathroom of Jalpaiguri government hospital Tuesday morning. Jalpaiguri correctional home acting in-charge Rajiv Ranjan said Narottam Gayen had been admitted to the government hospital on January 8 on the recommendation of the jail hospital after he complained of chest pain. The man was also suffering from high blood pressure. Gayen had been lodged in Jalpaiguri correctional home since September 27 last year in connection with a case relating to cruelty to a woman (Section 498A of IPC) and kidnapping (Section 365 of IPC), Ranjan said. Government Hospital Superintendent Partha Dey, who is away in Kolkata, when contacted said the man had committed suicide. (PTI)
Cargo vessel sinks, sailors rescued
Mangaluru: Seven persons aboard a mini cargo vessel carrying goods from Lakshadweep to Mangaluru were rescued after it developed a technical problem and sank near the port here, police said. All the seven persons, hailing from Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, were saved by fishermen who saw them staying afloat on wooden boards, seven hours after the ship sank. The ship, ‘Vijayalakshmi,’ which had set sail from Kiltan in Lakshadweep on January 10 with goods to the city, sank about eight km from its dock here at 4 AM yesterday, and the sailors managed to be afloat for seven hours on wooden planks till the fishermen’s boat sighted them, police said.
