Weavers showcase products at ‘buyers-sellers meet’

SHILLONG: Sohra Civil Sub Divisional Officer Ajay Singh Tomar on Thursday inaugurated the Buyers Sellers Meet organized by the office of the Zonal Officer Weaving Khasi & Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya Shillong at Madan Rikhana, Sohra.
Weavers from Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills and Ri Bhoi set up as many as 20 stalls at the Meet.
Speaking on the occasion, Tomar said that such programmes provide a platform to showcase the cultural and traditional ethos of the people. He added that the government has taken strong initiative to promote cottage industries and also requested the organisers to open a training centre in Cherrapunjee for the benefit of unemployed youths while assuring that he would provide assistance in promoting weaving as well as in ensuring that the weaver’s community gets help from the government.
Earlier, IA Diengdoh, Deputy Director, Weaving said that the programme was organized with an aim to promote  and improve marketing of the products as well as to attract domestic and international tourists to interact directly with the producers.
