SHILLONG:The Meghalaya Snooker team comprising of seven players left for the National Snooker & Billiards tournament to held in Kolkatta.The team comprising of Bishan Limboo,Amarnath Sharma,Aditya Sing-hania,Rohit Arora,Taufique Ali.Md Humayun,Feroz Ali,Naseem Ali.While Bishan Limboo and Amarnath Sharma have qualified for the main draw the others will have to play the qualifying rounds to enter the main draw. Paes-Klaasen reach final of Heineken Open Auckland:Leander Paes and Raven Klaasen breezed into the title clash of the Heineken Open after knocking out second seeds Bruno Soares and Alexander Peya in the semifinals, here on Friday. The fourth seeded Indo-South African pair rallied to beat the Brazilian-Austrian combo 3-6 6-3 in the semifinals of the USD 519,395 hard court event. It is second consecutive final for Paes and Klassen, after ending runners-up at the Chennai Open. Paes and Klaasen had four break chances in the opening set but converted none. They though dropped serve once to let the opponents run away with the first set. They did not face a single break chance in the second and capitalised on one of the two chances to draw parity. In the Super Tiebreaker, they easily were the better team. Paes and his new partner now face unseeded team of Briton Dominic Nglot and Romania’s Florin Mergea in the summit clash. (PTI)
Sachin to participate in ‘Run Kerala Run’
Thiruvananthapuram:Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will join tens of thousands of people from all walks of life in the ‘Run Kerala Run,’ a unique mass run being organised on January 20 at more than 7,000 centres simultaneously across Kerala as a curtain raiser event for the 35th National Games. Sachin, the goodwill ambassador of the Games, will run along with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and several other prominent personalities. It will be flagged off by Kerala Governor,Chief Justice P Sathasivam, at the South Gate of the state Secretariat. A release issued by the National Games Secretariat said here that millions of people would participate in the event, considered to be the largest of its kind in the country. It will showcase Kerala’s unity and solidarity.It said thousands of educational institutions, residents associations and corporate agencies have registered for the event. (UNI)
Baryshpolets wins International Grandmasters Chess
New Delhi:Grandmaster Andrey Baryshpolets of Ukraine won the 13th Parsvanth International Grandmasters chess tournament defeating Deepan Chakkravarthy in the 10th and final round here on Friday.It was a three-way tie for the top spot and Baryshpolets was followed by Ivan Popov of Russia and Alberto David of Italy who finished second and third respectively on eight points out of a possible ten. Of the three, Baryshpolets went home richer by Rs 300000.Deepan Challravarthy had the consolation of finishing as the best performing Indian as he finished tenth on seven points despite losing the last round game.It was a tough final day as overnight sole leader Mikhail Mozharov of Russia was outdone by David who won a fine game with black pieces. Popov also had to work hard but eventually prevailed over Van Huy Nguyen of Vietnam.Top seed Abhijeet Gupta won his last round game against Himal Gusain to end 11th on seven points. After a slump midway in the tournament Gupta recovered a little to win the last three rounds.(PTI)
