Pillion-riding prohibited during Republic Day

Guwahati:Guwahati Commissioner of Police Jyotirmoy Chakravarty on Friday issued an order prohibiting pillion riding on two-wheelers under Section 144 CrPC during the Republic Day. The order to remain in force from 8 am on January 25 to 8 pm on January 26 prohibits pillion riding on automotive two-whellers of any description in the whole area of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, an official release said. Police and security personnel in uniform, children below 16 years of age, women and senior citizens are exempted from the purview of the prohibitory order. The decision to impose the prohibitory order was taken as a preventive measure. It has been reported that various militant organisations active in the state are planning to carry out subversive activities in the run-up to Republic Day and have already given a call to boycott the celebrations. The order was further necessitated as cadres of various militant groups use motorcycle to carry out illegal activities, the release added. (PTI)

Man, cousin sent to jail for raping and brutalising wife

Agartala:A man and his cousin were convicted and sentenced to prison terms on Thursday for raping, brutalising and attempting to murder his wife about a year ago. The 25-year-old housewife was taken to a jungle at Murapara, about 65 km from here, on the night of February 23, last year by her husband Sankar Mandal (32) and his cousin Biswajit Bhowmik (33). The cousin then raped her and both men brutalised her. They then left her in the jungle presuming that she had died. The woman, however, managed to reach a nearby human locality after a few hours and was hospitalised by the locals. The Gomti district and sessions judge S K Pal awarded 12 years imprisonment to the cousin and five years jail term to her husband. (PTI)

Itanagar:Hydropower is essential for progress and prosperity of the state and will provide huge job opportunities to coming generations, said Arunachal Pradesh East Parliamentary Constituency MP Ninong Ering. Addressing a programme at Daying Ering Memorial Higher Secondary School, Pasighat in East Siang district of the state yesterday, Ering said, “People are opposing upcoming hydropower projects but China has already constructed such projects over the same river.” Highlighting the need for education, the MP termed it as the single tool that can eliminate poverty, ignorance and illiteracy. Teaching community should deliver their best efforts to the students so that they become worthy citizens of the nation, he said. He also lauded the efforts of Adi Bane Kebang (Women Wing) for taking measures to lessen the alcoholic menace in the district. Their tireless efforts should be appreciated by the whole society, Ering added. Speaking on the occasion, East Siang DC Nidhi Srivastava also shared various tips and strategies to improve education scenario of the school. (UNI)

JFA appeals to defy boycott call by militant outfits

Guwahati:The Journalists’ Forum Of Assam (JFA) on Friday appealed people to defy the boycott call given by various militant outfits and celebrate Republic Day. The media forum, which has been defying the diktat of various outfits to boycott both Republic Day and Independence Day in northeast India since 1998, also made an appeal to citizens to hoist the national flag in their localities. The JFA, in a statement issued by its president Rupam Barua and secretary Nava Thakuria, further requested all media establishments and journalist organizations including local press clubs of the region to take an initiative to celebrate Republic Day without fear. “Each Indian should pay homage to the martyrs of our freedom struggle on both Republic and Independence Days by hoisting the Tri-colour as it symbolises the suffering and sacrifices of numerous freedom fighters,” the statement said. BJP announces candidates for bypolls in Goa, Arunachal

New Delhi:The BJP on Friday announced Siddharth Kuncalienkar as the party candidate for bypolls to Goa’s Panaji Assembly seat on February 13.The seat fell vacant after sitting MLA and then chief minister Manohar Parrikar resigned to shift to the Centre as Defence Minister.The BJP also decided to field Bai Gadi from Liromoba (ST) Assembly seat in Arunachal Pradesh.Counting will be held on February 16. Churches in Nagaland to pray for NPF legislators on Sunday

Kohima:The Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has said that Churches in Nagaland are ‘deeply concerned’ about the political crisis that has developed within the Naga Peoples Front Legislators and decided to offer a special prayer for the NPF legislators. In a statement the NBCC has requested all the Christians and churches to set aside a special time on January 25, on Sunday and pray for the ‘quick arrival of a just and peaceful solution among the NPF Legislatures.’ All concerned have been called upon to ‘fervently pray for them as they are our Christian politicians as well as members of our local churches.’ The appeal was sent today by the NBCC with ‘prayer and in the name of God, and our Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Reconciles.’ (UNI)

Two KPLT militants arrested

Morigaon: Two suspected Karbi Peoples Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants have been arrested along with arms and ammunition in central Assam’s Morigaon district, said a police officer on Friday.The two were nabbed during a routine checking by the police at Jaluguti village last night, district Additional Superintendent of Police R K Handique told PTI. An AK-56 and an AK-47 rifle with 36 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the two ultras identified as Haren Das, 23 and Amal Das, 27, Handique said. The two had come from their base in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district to extort money in the twin Morigaion and Nagaon districts, the SP added. (PTI)
