TURA: The militant chief of the A’chik Matgrik Elite Force, Jack Marak had a narrow escape when police commandos raided his hideout in North Garo Hills and shot dead one militant on Monday morning.
A large consignment of plastic explosives was seized in the operation.
Police and CoBRA commandos of the CRPF raided a hideout of the AMEF outfit at Boldra Abri near Soba Jambal village in the early morning leading to an exchange of fire in which one militant identified as Sengrak S Sangma alias Andalao Matgrik was shot dead. He hailed from Hahim area of Kamrup district (Assam).
The AMEF chief, who was inside the makeshift camp, managed to flee with the rest of the group leaving behind several items used by the group. He was inside his tent when the raid took place.
“He (Jack) was spotted fleeing in a camouflage dress but due to the thick jungle and the terrain we could not nab him,” informed district police chief J F K Marak from Resubelpara.
In the rush to escape the militant chief left behind a pistol next to his blanket inside the makeshift tent.
One of the big recoveries has been highly powerful plastic explosives close to two dozen which were in the possession of the AMEF outfit. The presence of plastic explosives in the hands of Garo outfits, particularly GNLA, has been a worrying factor for security forces and there have been several cases of IED attacks involving plastic explosives.
The fleeing AMEF ultras left behind 23 numbers of plastic explosives along with 65 numbers of detonators along with a 7.65 pistol containing three live rounds, 8 empty cases of AK rifle ammunition, two wireless communication handsets of Kenwood and Motorola, five demand letter pads of AMEF and other incriminating documents.
