Swine flu claim 10 more lives, toll climbs to 49 in Rajasthan

Jaipur:Ten more people succumbed to swine flu in Rajasthan, taking the death toll in the state to 49 this year, health officials said on Monday. Of the ten new deaths recorded on Sunday, five persons died in Ajmer, two in Jodhpur, one each in Nagaur, Jaipur and Tonk, an official of the state medical and health department said. The victims were admitted in state-run and private hospitals, they said. Meanwhile, the health of former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who had tested positive for swine flu, was said to be improving and was in better condition, his personal secretary told PTI. In a tweet, Gehlot said he had tested positive for the H1N1 virus but his condition has improved after starting treatment in time. Rajasthan had witnessed 49 deaths due to H1N1 virus in the New Year, prompting the state government to direct senior medical officers from the medical directorate to go to various districts for effective monitoring of cases of swine flu. The toll of deaths included 26 females and 23 males. Jaipur recorded 14 deaths, Ajmer 9 and Nagaur 6, with two each in Tonk, Bikaner, Dausa, Jodhpur, Barmer, Kota, Bundi, Banswara, and one each in Alwar, Dungarpur, Pali, and Jhunjhunu. (PTI)

Revenue officer held for taking bribe

Raipur:A patwari (local revenue officer) was on Monday arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district. Tulsi Ram Chandel (57), posted at village Latabod of the district, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe from Chandulal Sahu for making changes in the ownership records of the latter’s ancestral property, an ACB official told PTI. Sahu, who resides in Latabod village owns two acres of ancestral land at his native place in his name. Last month, he had approached Chandel seeking partition of the ownership of property in the land records, the official said. However, the accused allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 for that purpose. Sahu paid the first instalment of Rs 1,000 and later approached ACB in Raipur in this connection, he said. The accused agreed to accept the bribe of Rs 4,000 at his office in Panchayat Bhawan, Latabod following which a trap was laid there. He was apprehended while he was receiving the cash from the complainant.  (PTI)

Woman gangraped by brother-in-law, his friend

Jaipur:A 24-year-old married woman was allegedly gangraped by her brother-in-law and his friend at Mitra colony of Karni Vihar thana here, police said on Monday. The victim’s younger sister Omwati and her husband Rambabu took her to their house where she was allegedly gangraped by Rambabu and his friend Ramprasad, they said. Four persons – the woman’s brother-in-law, his friend Ramprasad, Omwati and house owner Badri Bairwa – have been arrested. Omwati and the house owner watched the incident in the room, police said. A case under IPC section 376 (Punishment for rape) have been registered against Rambabu and Ramprasad, and 120 B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) have been registered against Omwati and Badri Bairwa, police said. The victim lives alone after a dispute with her husband and works as a labourer in the city. She had lodged a complaint yesterday against the four accused, police said, adding, she has been sent for medical examination and her statement would be recorded soon. Police said the four accused would be produced in a court later in the day. (PTI)
