Question mark over SIT probe credibility

SHILLONG: The credibility of Special Investigation Team which is headed by a CID officer to probe the death of sub inspector PJ Marabaniang is under question since the CID investigations into the crimes in the past have not brought any logical conclusions.
A case in point is the Tura child sacrifice case which was probed by the CID in 2011, but in vain as the family of the victim is yet to get justice even after four years.
Another probe which has not seen much headway is the matter related to the CMJ University as the CID is yet to  find the whereabouts of Govind Jha, Secretary CMJ Foundation, and Gopal Jha, Treasurer of CMJ  Foundation for almost five months as they are absconding. They are the sons of Chandra Mohan Jha
Since there are reports on the alleged involvement of the police in the killing of  Marbaniang, sources said that an investigation by the same police is unlikely to be independent.
The initial version of Ri Bhoi SP was that it was a suicide case, but it was only on Tuesday that the police headquarters decided to view it as a murder case.
Even in the case of the murder of former DGP W R Marbaniang’s maidservant Rinehskhem Kharsohnoh in 2007, finally CBI had to step in following the direction of the then Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court.
CSWO President Agnes Kharshiing who is following the case of the late sub inspector said that the case should be handed over to CBI.
“People do not have any faith in the police constituted Special Investigation Team  which is headed by a CID officer. Moreover, it is an irony that the supervision of the case will be done by Shillong City SP Vivek Syiem who is still sitting on the education scam”, Kharshiing alleged.
NPP Spokesperson James Sangma said that Government is trying to hide something and if it was serious in investigating the matter, the case should have been handed over to an independent agency which would probe the case more independently.
The Opposition UDP has already demanded a CBI inquiry into the matter as the party considers that only an independent agency can unravel the truth.
When contacted, BJP Meghalaya Unit General Secretary  Dipayan Chakraborty said that he cannot give his comments as he has to study the entire matter.
