SHILLONG: After much delay, the Nongpoh district jail is finally ready for inauguration.
According to sources, the project has been completed and the date of inauguration of the district jail depends on the availability of the Chief Minister.
The new district jail in Nongpoh which can accommodate up to 100 inmates will help to decongest the Shillong District Jail which shelters 366 inmates.
It has been learnt that the construction of the Nongpoh jail was delayed due to financial constraints following the revised estimate. Initially, the cost of the Nongpoh jail project was estimated at Rs 5.50 crore.
The construction of the Nongstoin District jail has also long missed its deadline.
The Rs 6.25 crore was scheduled to be completed by 2010.
