SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has issued notices to the Government and others on the alleged anomalies in the distribution of PDS in several areas in Wahlyngngia under Mawphlang block.
CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing who filed a petition in the High Court said that RTI findings revealed that some of the families of the village possessed more than one ration card of APL, BPL and AAY which were not within the knowledge of the families and rice, wheat and sugar were being lifted by showing the false number of households, therefore making a wrongful gain by deceiving the villagers by such manipulation and fraud.
Involvement of government officials is suspected in the issuance of double/triple ration cards.
Interestingly, though Kharshiing had filed an FIR with Sohiong outpost through Laban police station on December 7 last, the Laban police without registering the case prepared a report on December 8 stating that since the petitioner was not the beneficiary of PDS, the case cannot be taken up.
Subsequently, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial)-cum-Sessions Judge did not take cognizance of the matter since the petitioner was not the beneficiary of the PDS.
However, while hearing the petition, the High Court on Monday issued notices to the respondents returnable within 4 weeks. The maintainability of the case will be considered in the next date of hearing on March 9.
