Five members of truck hijacker’s gang arrested
Keonjhar:Five members of an inter-state highway truck hijacker’s gang were arrested by the police in Keonjhar district and two pistols and some vehicles seized from him, the police said on Wednesday. The persons were arrested from several places of the district during raids conducted yesterday by the police led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Gupteswar Bhoi, they said. Those arrested were identified as Ashim Guha of West Bengal, Sunil Das, Kartikeswar Sethy, Jitu Munda and Kalia alias Jitendra Patra. Two pistols, a truck and a car were seized from them, police said. Some other members of the gang are believed to be on the run and efforts are on to nab them. On January 23 night, the gang members looted a truck on NH-215 near Bankamaruni village under Sadar police limits. (PTI)
Two killed by unidentified assailants
Faridabad:Two persons were on Wednesday killed by armed assailants here, following which the locals protested against the incident by blocking the national highway, police said. The deceased were identified as 30-year-old Jitendra Singh and 20-year-old Kallu, police said. The incident took place when Singh, a cable operator, went to check the cable signal in his area, they said, adding, he climbed a poll and asked Kallu to assist him. Around five-six youths came and fired at Kallu, who died at the spot, they said. Singh started running towards the fields but was gunned down by the accused, police added. A case has been registered against unidentified accused, they said. Meanwhile, irate locals protested agaianst the incident by blocking the national highway here. However, the situation was brought under control later by the police. (PTI)
Woman stabbed to death by husband in UP
Ballia:A 35-year-old woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her husband in Khalilpur village in Chitbadagaon area here, police said on Wednesday. The deceased identified as Kashmiri was killed by her husband Hareram Rajbhar after they had an altercation over selling land on Tueasday, Superintendent of Police K C Goswami said. The accused then fled from the spot, leaving his dead wife in the house, the SP said, adding that the incident came to the fore when his son reached home. Police have registered an FIR in this connection and launched a manhunt to nab the accused. (PTI)
Protesting farmers call-off strike in Jind
Jind:The 15-day-long hunger strike by the farmers here was called off after the assurance by district administration and Akhil Bharatiya Kisan Sabha of providing drought relief within 10 days. The sub-divisional magistrate assured the release of amount for sugarcane farming, besides promising to put an end on sale of medicines along with fertilisers. He also said that a proposal for linking farming with MNREGA has been sent to the Haryana chief minister. Addressing the protesters, state deputy president Dakshya Shyokhand said that if the state continues with the “anti-farmer” policy, an state-level agitation will be launched in 20 days. (PTI)
10 test positive for swine flu in Kolkata
Kolkata:Ten people have tested positive for swine flu here, a health department official said on Wednesday.”So far there are 10 positive cases in Kolkata. The tests are being run at the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) facility in Beleghata,” a Swasthya Bhavan source told IANS on conditions of anonymity.Two women tested positive for the H1N1 influenza virus in Kolkata two days ago. Both were admitted in private hospitals and the condition of one, who recently visited Mumbai, was critical.”Out of the 10, three patients hail from other states,” the source said.(IANS)
