Two home guards personnel killed in grenade explosion

Jorhat: Two home guards personnel were killed and 20 others, including three critically injured, in a grenade explosion at Numaligarh firing range in Assam’s Golaghat district, police said on Wednesday.  The explosion took place last evening when 222 home guards from Golaghat and Jorhat districts were undergoing training. While two personnel were killed on the spot, 20 others were injured, they said. The condition of three of the injured home guards was critical and they been shifted to Jorhat Medical College Hospital. The dead and the injured have been identified and an inquiry into the incident has been ordered by the district authorities, police added. (PTI)

Myanmarese national, local held with heroin

Aizawl:A total of 368 gram of heroin was seized and two persons, including a Myanmarese arrested in Aizawl by Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department’s Anti Narcotic Squad. The department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga told PTI that the contraband, seized in last 24 hours, was worth around Rs 14 lakh in the local market. Chungliana (40) of Muanna Veng and Khaidoliana (45) of Haimual in neighbouring Myanmar were arrested in this connection, he said. They were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, Zohmingthanga said. (PTI)

Board examinations begin in nagaland

Kohima:A total of 37,269 students are sitting for High School Leaving Certificate and (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations 2015 under Nagaland Board of School Education from Tuesday. Out of the total enrollment, 13,657 students are appearing for the HSSLC exams (Class-12) in the three different streams of Arts, Commerce and Science, which commenced this morning and will conclude on March 2 in 48 centres across the State.The candidates comprise 6899 males and 6758 females candidates. Cleanliness drive in Assam public transport system

Guwahati: Assam state transport department has directed authorities to maintain cleanliness in all the public transport vehicles and bus stations keeping in with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s thrust on cleanliness.The Managing Director of Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) has been directed by the Transport Commissioner to provide garbage collection bins in all buses operating under it, an official release said here on Tuesday. All District Transport Officers and Regional Transport Authorities have been directed to convince bus owners and mid-sized passenger carrying vehicles to provide garbage collection bins in vehicles.The garbage collection bins should be disposed off at a predetermined disposal area and should be sanitised frequently. Cleanliness of bus stations should also be given priority and sufficient number of garbage collection bins should be provided in bus station campuses. The District Transport Officers and Regional Transport Authorities have also been directed to convene meeting with concerned bus associations, individual owners, representatives of ASTC and other passenger carrying vehicle associations and owners to ensure cleanliness in public transport system.(PTI)
