Angry mob ransack DC’s office
Kohima: A mob ransacked the office of the Deputy Commissioner and also reportedly fired several shots at the office of the Superintendent of Police on Saturday evening protesting the alleged abduction and killing of a boy from a nearby village.
A high-level Security Coordination meeting, chaired by the Chief Secretary and senior civil and police officials Saturday, reviewed the worsening situation in Tuensang.
An official bulletin stated that the Government took a serious note of the development in the district especially the killing of the student after the visit of the ministerial team.
In view of the worsening situation, the state Government has decided to take additional measures to book those involved in disturbing the peace so as to control the situation. Besides an ex-gratia, the State Government had also announced a slew of measures such as restrictions on activities in the disputed areas, compulsory deposit of all arms and ammunition and relief to the affected.
In this regard, the State Government has decided to set up a Joint Control Room involving the civil, police and paramilitary forces so as to complement the efforts to control the worsening situation and maintain peace.
A total of nine people have been arrested by police following the incidents.
The victim, identified as one Lamji Chingmak was reportedly kidnapped from Tuensang town at around 10:30 hrs by armed miscreants and was later shot dead. The body of the victim with bullet marks was recovered from the outskirts of Tuensang town at around 13:00 hrs, the sources said.
It may be mentioned that the situation in Tuensang town has been tense since November last year over the land dispute between the Chang and Yimchunger tribes. Two persons, a teenager Changma Chang (14) and Thrimhokiu Yimchunger were killed on February 6 last while Lamji was the third victim of the ongoing clash.
The District Administration had imposed curfew under Section 144 CrPC on February 8 and relaxed it on February 12, after the situation was brought under control.
The State Government has reportedly rushed additional forces to Tuensang during the recent days and with directives to brook no interference while enforcing the rule of law.
It was also disclosed that police with support of paramilitary forces would soon chalk out a strategy to launch a proactive intervention so as to prevent armed militias and their supporters from hijacking the authority of the legally established government.
Any people, who continue to involve in provocative or criminal activity will not be tolerated and that the government would take stern action, the sources said. (UNI)
