SHILLONG: The four-day budget session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) beginning Monday is expected to be a stormy affair with the Congress-led Opposition Khasi Hills United Democratic Alliance (KHUDA) planning to attack the Executive Committee (EC) led by Adelbert Nongrum for its failure to address pertinent issues including taking the consensus of the traditional heads on the ruling of the High Court of Meghalaya pertaining to the Rangbah Shnong.
Though the Opposition has ruled out moving a no-confidence motion against the EC, it is planning to attack the EC by moving a resolution.
“You never know. The EC might collapse since the resolution will be put to voting if we are not satisfied with the reply,” a senior Congress MDC, who did not want to be named, said on Sunday.
The MDC also criticized the EC for not being able to fill up the post of the Deputy Chairman following the resignation of Sohryngkham MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem (HSPDP ) from the chair in October last year.
According to the MDC, the inability of the EC to fill up the post of Deputy Chairman is a clear reflection of the internal rumblings in the ruling All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA).
“We are moving a resolution on this issue,” he added.
The Congress MDC further informed that they have moved several cut motions on the vote on account for three months which is expected to be tabled on the first day of the session.
Meanwhile, KHNAM MDC Latiplang Kharkongor on Sunday said that his party expected the ARPA partners including lone Independent MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri to keep their commitment of remaining with the coalition till the completion of the term.
“We accepted the responsibility of leading the EC after both HSPDP and UDP declined to lead the ruling ARPA and we are responsible for ensuring that ARPA lasts its term,” Kharkongor said.
“We have full faith in the coalition partners. We expect no one to betray and cause the downfall of the EC,” Kharkongor added.
It may be noted here that HSPDP MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem had threatened to move a no-confidence motion against CEM Adelbert Nongrum for failing to pay heed to his request of convening the meeting of the traditional heads in view of the High Court ruling.
In addition, sources close to the UDP MDCs had revealed that they were unhappy with the performance of the present CEM but were unwilling to come out in the open against Nongrum.
