SHILLONG: Indian Museum, Kolkata (IMK) in collaboration with the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures (DBCIC), Shillong organized a workshop on museum, indigenous people and living heritage from February 18-21 at Transformational Leadership Resource Centre, SILOAM, Shillong as part of North East Museum Programme (NEMP).
The workshop was attended by 39 participants representing museums, NGOs, universities and others from North East India.
The event was inaugurated on February 18 in the presence of Prof. Amareswar Galla (International Institute of Inclusive Museum, Australia/Denmark/India) as the Chief Guest and GS Rautella (Director General, National Council of Science Museum) as the Guest of Honour.
Dr. B. Venugopal presented a brief history of Indian museum and the significance of the workshop. Rautella, in his message appreciated the efforts of the organizing team in bringing together the North East Museum stakeholders in their pilot project.
In his keynote address Prof. Amareswar spoke on the importance of preserving and promoting the living heritage of the indigenous peoples of North East India.
Documentary films on IMK and North East were screened after which a vote of thanks was proposed by Sayan Bhattacharya, co-ordinator of the workshop.
The last day was set aside for a fieldtrip to Syntein near Mawsynram where the participants witnessed how indigenous bamboo handicrafts are made.
