Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh governor Lt Gen (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma on Wednesday asked the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) to become an anchor and bring all women welfare organisations of the state together and strive towards its goal.
The members of the Commission led by its chairperson Mitali Tingkhatra called on the Governor at Raj Bhawan, here.
The Governor said women empowerment is a serious challenge and APSCW has the institutional power to empower the fairer gender, a Raj Bhawan statement said.
“Create a common forum and reach out to the districts, particularly rural areas. Enhance your endeavour through radio and deliver lectures on gender challenges in colleges and schools,” Sharma said.
Advising new members of the Commission, he said they must take their duty as social service.
“Take this opportunity as a crusade for a better and healthier environment. A long journey starts with the first step, therefore, take the first with clear vision and plan,” he said.
Sharma also advised the members to avail assistance from state departments, particularly Health, Social Welfare and Information and Public Relation, district administration and NGOs. He suggested for involving women achievers of the state in their campaign. Earlier, the members shared their challenges, achievements of the Commission and future activities with the first couple of the state.
They said domestic violence, polygamy, child marriage and unemployment are the main challenges.
APSCW vice chairperson  Nabam Tabang, APSCW members Duma Yekar, Hage Yasung and Oter Ering Tayeng and member secretary Yame Higio and Muskaan Welfare Society members, Dr Jennifer Tayeng and Kobby Bagra were present during the meeting, the statement added. (PTI)
