SHILLONG: Four persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the brutal  killing of five members of two families in Garo Hills.
According to police, the arrested persons are Lind B Marak, a village headman, Seminal B Marak , R P Marak and Chendal T Sangma.
Interrogation is on to ascertain the role of more people involved in the crime, police said.
Police had on Monday recovered the bodies of five persons from two families from two graves in a village under Rongram development block in West Garo Hills.
They were murdered with their hands tied by villagers for allegedly practising witchcraft.
The murdered victims also included an elderly woman and a school teacher.
Police are investigating into the real motive behind the crime thought the initial reports had suggested witch craft behind the crime.
When contacted, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi said that the district administration is yet to institute a separate probe since the police are capable of solving the case.
“We are currently looking at the arrests of people involved in the crime and hope that police would be able to solve the matter at the earliest” the official said.
