IED recovered from railway track
Goalpara: A powerful Improvised Explosive Device was detected at a railway track in Assam’s Goalpara district on Friday, police said. The IED was found amidst the stones between the tracks by patrolling railway police at Barigaon this morning. The bomb disposal squad of the Army has been informed and the IED was expected to be defused by Friday evening. All trains in the Jogighopa-Guwahati line have been suspended since 9 AM and were expected to resume by this evening, railway officials said. (PTI)
Mizoram Assembly Budget session from March 17
Aizawl: The Budget session of the Mizoram Assembly would begin from March 17 with the customary address by Governor Dr Aziz Qureshi. The session would continue till March 25. Additional Secretary of the state Assembly S R Zokhuma told PTI Friday that the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) which met under the chairmanship of speaker Hiphei chalked out the programme of the coming session today. He said that the Governor would deliver his customary gubernatorial address to the assembly on the first day of the session and the motion of thanks on his address would be deliberated on the second day. The annual Budget would be presented by the Finance Minister Lalsawta on March 19, he said, adding that Lalsawta was likely to seek a vote-on-account for the first four months of the next fiscal as the Centre was yet to allocate the annual plan outlay for Mizoram. The vote-on-account and the supplementary demand are likely to be discussed and passed on March 23. (PTI)
Assam govt distribute 2,93,413 bicycles to girl students
Guwahati: Assam government has distributed free bicycles to 2,93,413 girl students to encourage girl students to attend schools. These girl students belong to BPL families and have greatly benefited from this free distribution during the present government’s tenure, an official release said here Friday. It has also encouraged the girl students to attend schools and has helped in the process of acquiring skills and education. Apart from this, the government has also distributed free school uniform to 1,63,68,581 students.This is part of the state government’s initiative to improve the education scenario of Assam, the release added. UGC team to visit Cotton University
Guwahati: The University Grants Commission has been constituted a committee to facilitate the flow of funds to Cotton State University here and list it under Section 12B. The UGC Committee will visit the university shortly for the purpose, said a press release by the university Registrar Prof Dilip Kumar Patgiri. Upon receiving the UGC grants, the university will be able to create facilities to undertake research in priority areas, boosting the academic ambience of the institution, the release said. Cotton College State University was established by an Act of the Assam government and recognised by the UGC under Section 2f in 2013, it added. Section 12 (B) of the UGC Act of 1956 makes the colleges eligible for central assistance from the Government of India. (PTI)
Two youths carrying 13.5 kg gold arrested
Rangiya: Two youths were arrested and 13.5 kg gold was recovered from their possession in Assam’s Nalbari district Friday, the police said. Acting on a tip-off, a police team of Kamrup (Rural) district led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Kanteswar Gogoi chased a vehicle, but was unable to intercept it within the district limits. Police in the adjoining Nalbari district was informed and the vehicle was intercepted and the two youths along with the huge quantity of gold was taken into custody. The youths, currently being interrogated at the Nalbari police station, hailed from Manipur and were coming from Dimapur with the gold, but their destination was yet to be ascertained, Gogoi added.
