Normalcy gradually returns in Tuensang area of Nagaland

Kohima: The situation in trouble-torn Tuensang, which seen a series of violence by the middle of the current month, has gradually coming back to normalcy without any incident past several days and the district administration is thinking of relaxing curfew in the town. According to official sources on Saturday the situation of Tuensang has remained calm the past few days, which has seen incidents of violence since the February 16, while curfew remains in force. The Tuensang police informed last evening that there was no report of any disturbance from any of the sub-divisions and in Tuensang town. Stating that the situation is under control, it was informed that curfew was temporarily relaxed from 10 am to 2 pm to allow the public to get essential commodities. Curfew will again be relaxed on Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm to allow people to attend Sunday mass, sources said. (UNI)

Nagaland to observe Intl Ear & Hearing Care Day

Kohima: The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Nagaland is observing ‘International Ear & Hearing Care Day’ under the theme ‘Make listening safe’ on March 3 at Conference Hall of Para Medical Training Institute, Kohima. Official sources said that Nagaland Commissioner and Secretary for Health and Family Welfare Sentiyanger Imchen will address the gathering. H&FW Principal Director Dr G Kemp, Nandira Chankija, Mission Director NHM will also exhort the gathering. Dr Kedozoto Pienyii, ENT specialist Naga Hospital Authority of Kohima, State Coordinator of National Programme for Prevention and Control of Deafness (NPPCD) will talk on the significance of the day. The programme will be chaired by Dr Vizolie Suokhrie, Joint Director and Nodal Office NCD while vote of thanks will be proposed by Dr Obangjungla, Deputy Director and State Nodal Officer NPPCD. Special invitee to the programme includes PHED, Social Welfare and School Education Department. (UNI)

SSA teachers demands hike of salary in Arunachal

Itanagar: All Arunachal SSA Teacher’s Association has submitted a representation to the chief secretary, seeking enhancement of the salaries of SSA teachers of the state in view of the skyrocketing inflation. The SSA teachers are unable to meet basic needs with their consolidated salaries – Rs 21,175 for ATs, and Rs 26,453 for JTs – which are much less than what SSA teachers in other parts of the country are getting, the association said. Citing the example of Chandigarh, where the salaries of ATs and JTs are Rs 31, 000 and Rs 35,100 respectively, and said offering lesser salaries to the SSA teachers in Arunachal Pradesh amounted to violation of the Employment Standard Act-2000, which calls for providing equal pay for equal work. Prisoner commits suicide inside lock-up in Arunachal

Itanagar: An under-trial allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the lock-up at Miao Police Station in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh, police said on Saturday. Babu Kamyal (21) committed suicide on Wednesday inside the lock-up toilet after he was arrested the previous day for allegedly stealing a SBBL 12 Bore gun along with live cartridges from a person. Kamyal was arrested following a complaint lodged by one Punlinong Tikhak of Old Champu-II village, who in his FIR had alleged that the accused had stolen a gun on February 23 last. The weapon along with 22 cartridges was recovered by the police from a nearby jungle. (PTI)

Two armed NSCN militants arrested in Arunachal

Itanagar: Two armed NSCN militants were arrested by security forces from Jongrom Village in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The rebels were arrested on Thursday during a joint operation carried out by 14 Assam Rifles and district police, a release said here on Saturday. It was not clear which factions of NSCN the cadres belonged to. Two pistols and ammunition were seized from them. (PTI)

Kohima Police seizes ganja worth Rs 4.8 lakh

Kohima: Kohima police have arrested three youths from Manipur for smuggling ganja. Official sources said the personnel of Kohima police manning the Phesama check-gate at Kohima intercepted a mini truck carrying 480 kilograms of contraband ganja. The police estimate that the contraband is worth approximately at Rs 4.8 lakhs. The ganja was found in 48 different packets with each packet weighting 10 kilograms, police said. The accused have been identified as residents of Sirong village under Senapati district in the state of Manipur. The accused have been taken into police custody and charged with the possession transporting the contraband interrogation was on to apprehend the entire smuggling gang. (UNI)
