Heroin worth Rs 1 crore seized; accused arrested

Khatima (U’khand):A man was arrested here on charges of illegal drug trafficking after a parcel of 10 grams of heroin worth nearly Rs one crore in the international market was seized from his possession. Harjinder was arrested on Sunday when a parcel of 10 grams of heroin was seized from his possession, SSP of Udhamsingh Nagar district Nilesh Anand Bahrney said. The parcel was meant to be sent to UAE by speed post, he said, adding the factory for which the man worked has been sealed, he said. During inquiry of the accused, it came to the fore that a factory allegedly dispatched heroin worth lakhs of rupees to a number of foreign countries including England and Denmark by speed post. On the basis of facts revealed during his interrogation, the premises of the drug company was raided and sealed. The factory owner and his employees are at large, the SSP said. The accused has been arrested under the NDPS act and is being interrogated to ascertain whether the drug trafficking racket had international ramifications, he said. (PTI)

2 women survive molestation attempt; jump from running auto

Thane:Two young women jumped from a speeding autorickshaw when the driver allegedly tried to molest them en route Bhiwandi here, police said on Monday. The incident took place around 9 PM last night when the two Sarika Patil (22) and Pratiksha Puarnik (17) were returning from a ABVP function and boarded an auto from Malhar Talkies for Bhiwandi to go to their relative’s house, they said. As soon as they reached the Cadbury junction here, the driver tried to molest the girls and sped towards a different direction. Alarmed, the girls jumped out of the auto injuring themselves following which they were rushed to nearby Jupiter Hospital, Vartak Nagar police said. Vartak Nagar police have registered offences under sections 354 (a), 509, 366 of the IPC and also section 12 of the POCSO Act 2012. Soon after the incident, senior police officers including DCP V Vilas Chandanshive and DCP Traffic Rashmi Karandikar rushed to the scene and then visited the girls at the hospital. Their statements have been recorded and hunt for the driver is on. (PTI)

Watchman murdered, body dumped in drain

Palghar:A 45-year-old company watchman was bludgeoned to death allegedly by a villager, who then set the victim afire and dumped him in a drain in Vasai here, police said on Monday. API Sunil Soste of Valiv Police Station said accused Pradeep Senapati beat watchman Srikrishna Dwivedi to death over a long-pending dispute and then poured kerosene on his body and set him ablaze on Sunday. Dwivedi’s partially burnt body was then disposed of in a nearby drain, from where it was recovered last evening, police said. A case has been registered against the absconding accused under section 302 and 201 of the IPC, they said. The body has been sent for postmortem and hunt for the killer is on. (PTI)

Hardcore Maoist held

Aurangabad:A hardcore Maoist has been arrested from a locality under Goh Police Station area in Bihar’s Aurangabad district, a police officer said on Monday. Acting on a tip off, police raided a hideout near Bihuri canal last evening and arrested a hardcore Maoist, identified as Nand Das, with a pistol and some ammunition, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anwar Javed said. Das, a native of Majhiyawan village under Konch Police Station area of neighbouring Gaya district, was wanted by the police in connection with a number of incidents of violence in Aurangabad and Gaya districts, he said. He was also involved in an attack on a police camp at Jajapur in Gaya district two years ago in which three SAP jawans among six persons were killed by the ultras who had also looted a large quantity of arms and ammunition from the said police camp. Woman air passenger held for trying to smuggle gold bars

Mumbai:A woman passenger has been arrested at the Mumbai international airport for allegedly trying to smuggle 3.84 kgs of gold worth about Rs 94.94 lakh into the country from the UAE, a Customs official said on Monday. The passenger, Nitaben Desai, holding an Indian passport, was intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officials on suspicion after she landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International airport here from Abu Dhabi on an Etihad Airways flight on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday, the official said. A detailed examination of her baggage and personal search resulted in the recovery of 33 gold bars collectively weighing 3.847 kgs. The total value of the seized yellow metal is estimated to be Rs 94.94 lakh, the official said. The woman had concealed the precious bars in the cavities created in a specially made belt worn by her. She was acting as a carrier for the sender of the gold bars and was supposed to hand them over to a buyer in Mumbai. (PTI)
