Agartala:The ruling CPI-M in Tripura on Saturday alleged a tribal-based party was trying to incite people along the communal lines before this year’s election of the 30—member Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The party in a statement alleged a group of activists of the Indigenous Peoples Front of Twipra (IPFT), a tribal-based party raided the office of the village committee at Rajanisardarpara, a tribal hamlet in Khowai district on Wednesday last and broke furniture of the office and chanted slogan for ‘free Tripura’.
Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the tribal council, Ranjit Debbarma visited Rajanisardarpara on Friday last and spoke to people and also visited the village committee office, which was set ablaze by the activists of IPFT. “We have appealed to all sections of people to maintain communal harmony and peace in the state.
We have also filed a case against 27 people who were engaged in damage and burning of the office”, he added. So far, no one was arrested in this connection. Claiming police had confirmed the incident, the statement said another group of IPFT activists set aflame at least five shops at Nadiabazar in Unakoti district.
“These incidents are provocative in nature with an intention of inciting communal tension between the tribals and non tribals of the state. These are being done with an evil and political motive.
We appeal to all sections of people of the state to maintain communal harmony and peace”, the statement issued by the state party Secretariat said.
The TTTAADC was formed in 1987 under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect and safeguard the political, economic and cultural interests of the tribals, who consist one third of the state population.
The tribal council constitute two third of the state territory. (PTI)
