Gold jewellery stolen from Telugu film director’s house
Hyderabad: Gold jewellery weighing about 150 grams has allegedly been stolen from the residence of Telugu film director Puri Jagannadh in Jubilee Hills area here, police said today. “A complaint was lodged yesterday stating that gold ornaments weighing 15 tolas were stolen from the house over a period of 30 days between February and this month when the director and his wife were away for shooting,” they said. Following the complaint, a case has been registered by Jubilee Hills police and investigation is on, Assistant Commissioner of Police Uday Kumar Reddy said. The director’s family suspects the role of a maid servant at their house behind the theft, he said. The jewellery was used by the director’s daughter for a school event and maid servants in the house were aware of it, he said. (PTI)

14 people develop infection after eye operation in Haryana
Panipat: At least 14 people complained of ‘infection’ in their eyes after undergoing operations conducted by an NGO, local health authorities said on Saturday. Taking a serious note of the incident, Haryana government has ordered an inquiry into the issue and promised to bear the entire expenditure incurred on their treatment. “Out of total 19 patients, 14 have developed infection in their eyes after their cataract operation was conducted at a local hospital by NGO Samaj Seva Samiti on March 11,” Panipat civil surgeon Inderjit Dhankhar said, confirming the incident. The affected patients, in the age group of 40 to 80 years were admitted to PGIMER Chandigarh for treatment on Friday night, he said. “The PGI doctors will be able to tell whether they have lost eye vision or not,” the surgeon said. The surgeon also informed that the NGO had not taken prior permission for holding the eye camp. (PTI)

Couple acquitted of charges of killing three-yr-old daughter
Mumbai: Giving benefit of doubt, the Bombay High Court has acquitted a couple convicted for the murder of their three-year-old daughter at Jategaon village in Nandgaon taluka of Nashik district. Roshni, who was staying with her father Haribhau Varpe and step-mother Usha Varpe, was found dead in the house in 2012 and the postmortem report indicated that she was strangulated. Haribhau and Usha were arrested and convicted for the murder by a Malegaon court. Being aggrieved, they filed an appeal in the High Court. “We find that the prosecution has utterly failed to prove the offence. In our opinion, the appellants are entitled to be given the benefit of doubt,” said Justices Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi and P V Hardas in their order on March 12. (PTI)
