SHILLONG:  The Water Resource department has cleared a project worth nearly Rs 1 crore to address the problem of soil erosion and  flood in  Umngi river in Balat.
Informing this, the Minister in charge of Water Resources Rowell Lyngdoh said that few years back a consultant was engaged to study and  prepare a detailed project report to control erosion in the river.
The consultant recently submitted its report to the department and the department is studying the report.
However, since the erosion is taking its toll on the population living along the river, he said that the department has  undertaken a  flood control  project and the  project has been cleared by the department.
“We will be inviting tenders in this regard shortly,” he said.
According to Lyngdoh, the Bramhaputra Board has also submitted a project to the Central Government for the river and he was informed that the  Board has invited tenders for the flood control in the river.
The river every year during the rainy season creates havoc.
