Govt fully prepared to tackle swine flu: Hek
Health and Family Welfare Minister A.L. Hek on Tuesday asserted that the government was fully prepared to tackle swine flu and informed that medicines for treating swine flu was available with the department.
Replying to a query by UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh on the steps being taken by the state government to prevent the outbreak of swine flu in the State, Hek assured that the department was ready to tackle the any threat.
Lyngdoh pointed out the lack of coordination between the Health department and the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary department to tackle the threat.
Raising a supplementary question, NPP’s James Sangma also inquired if the State had quarantine units ready in case of an outbreak, to which the Minister replied that isolation units had been set up in CHCs and PHCs.

Opp raises disease affecting areca nut crop
Leader of the Opposition Donkupar Roy on Tuesday questioned the government on actions taken to contain the bud rot disease affecting the areca nut plantations in Ri-War areas.
Replying to the query, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said that the Agriculture department has taken up the matter with ICAR, Meghalaya, and other institutes.
He also said that government would continue to seek expert advice to address the issue. He further mentioned that the department has been assisting affected farmers with advisories and inputs on how to combat the disease.

‘Five held for night watchman’s murder’
Home Minister Roshan Warjri on Tuesday informed the House that five persons suspected to be involved in the murder of one Jenison Marak in South West Garo Hills on December 20 last year had been picked up for interrogation. Replying to a query by NPP MLA James Sangma, Warjri informed that investigation was on in the matter. It may be mentioned that 35-year-old Jenison Marak, who was a night watchman for a Guwahati-based contractor, was shot dead while he was on duty in the village of Dilligre at Kambagpara under Ampati PS in South West Garo Hills.Marak had been called out of his house by an unidentified man and was taken a little further from his house and shot dead.
 
New site identified for sanitary landfill at NST
Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Tuesday asserted that the state government had identified a site at New Shillong Township (NST) for a long-term sanitary landfill.
Replying to a query by UDP legislator Jemino Mawthoh, Lyngdoh informed that the construction of a short-term landfill site was under progress at Mawiong.Lyngdoh further informed that a meeting had been called by the Urban Affairs Minister to seek public opinion on construction of the sanitary landfill at New Shillong Township and the department was examining the observations.Asked if there was opposition to the sanitary landfill at NST, Lyngdoh replied that people expected the government to manage their garbage but no one was willing to give land to dump the garbage.

Process on for hawkers’ market in Shillong
Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh informed the House on Tuesday that the government had initiated the process of constructing a hawkers’ market in Shillong.
Replying to a question by UDP’s Paul Lyngdoh on the issue, Ampareen informed that the Town Vending Committee in Shillong was engaged in the process.
Informing that the government had notified town vending committees in each district, she said, “It is the mandate of the Town Vending Committee to identify hawkers’ market in accordance with the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014.”
