Aizawl: West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi, who has been given additional charge of Mizoram, will assume office before President Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to the state on April 9.
The state must have a governor during the President’s visit, a Raj Bhavan official told PTI.
Aizawl Raj Bhavan sources said that the outgoing governor Aziz Qureshi, who returned to Aizawl from Delhi on Sunday, told the Raj Bhavan officials he would stay back in Mizoram for one or two days.
Qureshi was transferred from Uttarakhand on December 30 last and took charge as Mizoram Governor on January 9.
He was, however, dismissed on Saturday by the Union government.
Mizo students to protest frequent change
of Governors
Taking a strong resentment against the frequent transfer of governors in Mizoram, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (Mizo students’ association) has decided to launch a series of protests.
An executive meeting of the MZP in Aizawl on Monday decided to stage a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan during the swearing-in of West Bengal Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi, who has been asked to take additional charge of Mizoram governor after the sacking of Aziz Qureshi.
The date for swearing-in of Tripathi is yet to be decided.
The MZP would later organise picketing against central government employees and hoist black flags on all central government offices in Aizawl.
The MZP will also organise a demonstration when President Pranab Mukherjee visit the state capital on April 9 to grace the convocation of Mizoram University.
Condemning the frequent transfer and sacking of governors in Mizoram, the MZP accused the Centre of using Mizoram as dumping ground for unwanted governors.
“It is provocative and a disregard to the people of Mizoram. The state being used as dumping ground for unwanted governors hurt the sentiments of the people,” an MZP release said. (Agencies)
