SHILLONG: Buoyed by the positive response to his call to MPs to adopt a village each, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now appealed to legislators across the country to adopt a village each.
The prime minister had launched the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana on October 11 last year.
Meghalaya C&RD Minister Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday informed that the Centre has asked the 60 legislators of the state to adopt a village each in their respective constituency for implementation of this ambitious scheme under which the chosen village will be developed as a model village.
According to Tynsong, the objective of the model village scheme is broad and covers issues like road connectivity, health facilities, education, economic livelihood and sanitation, among others.
Elaborating further on the Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana, the minister informed that four villages have been adopted as per the recommendations of the three parliamentarians from the State and nominated Rajya Sabha member K.T.S. Tulsi.
Shillong Lok Sabha member Vincent H Pala has adopted Lakadong-Shangpung village under Laskein Block, Tura MP Purno Agitok Sangma has selected Dingok-Chenggalma village in North Garo Hills while Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem has identified Umkhoi village under Mawkynrew Block in East Khasi Hills.
Tulsi has adopted Nongbah-Myrdon village under Umsning Block in Ri Bhoi under the programme.
Speaking on the implementation of the Yojana, Tynsong said the respective deputy commissioners will have to constitute a monitoring committee with the respective block development officer as the charge officer for implementation of the Yojana in the selected villages.
“The committee will have to come up with the action plan for implementing various programmes in the selected villages and the schemes will take off by June, 2015,” Tynsong said, adding that by 2016, one village in the State will be developed into a model village while two more villages will be taken up by 2019.
“The village adoption scheme is still in its primary stage in Meghalaya but committees for its implementation have been constituted and are headed by the MPs from the state with the respective deputy commissioners appointed as member secretary,” Tynsong said adding that the committee was preparing the master plan for implementation of the scheme in the four adopted villages.
Tynsong also informed that the master plan would be finalized by September after which work would begin.
