Brendon McCullum receives Sir Richard Hadlee Medal
Auckland: New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been awarded Sir Richard Hadlee medal, the country’s highest cricketing honour, for his inspirational leadership and exemplary batting at a glittering ceremony, here. McCullum, 33, led the Kiwis to their first World Cup final where they did lose to Australia by seven wickets at a packed MCG on March 29 but won a million fans with their entertaining show throughout the 50-over showpiece event. With 328 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 188.50, McCullum led by example to be named captain of the ICC’s team of the tournament. McCullum won the top award ahead of Kane Williamson, who claimed the Redpath Cup for first-class batting, and Trent Boult, who was the winner of the Winsor Cup for bowling. Williamson had a season to savour in 2014-15 and was recognised in winning the Twenty20 International Player of the Year, the ODI Player of the Year and the Test Player of the Year. But come April 8 and many of the Kiwi cricketers will be seen in their respective IPL colours with McCullum turning out for Chennai Super Kings. (PTI)
Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio likely to play for FC Goa
New Delhi: Brazilian World Cup winner Lucio is set to grace the second edition of Indian Super League (ISL) football as FC Goa’s marquee player. Sources close to the team, which reached the semifinals of the inaugural edition last year, say chief coach Zico is keen to have the former Bayern Munich player and UEFA Champions League winner with Inter Milan on board. It is learnt that the centre-back is willing to work under the legendary Zico. This could mean Robert Pires, who was the franchise’s marquee player last season, would make way for Lucio, also known as Lucimar Ferreira da Silva, who was a part of the triumphant Brazil World Cup squad in 2002. The veteran defender is currently plying his trade for the Brazilian club Palmeiras. Star playmaker from Argentina Juan Roman Riquelme was also considered. Sources said Zico has already sent a word to Lucio to consider the prospect of playing in the ISL and that an offer letter has been sent to the player by the franchise. The 36-year-old Lucio has made 21 appearance for his side this season.  (PTI)
Pietersen ‘not on England radar’, says Moores
London: Kevin Pietersen “isn’t on the radar” for an England recall, coach Peter Moores told reporters on Thursday as his squad prepared to fly out to the West Indies. Incoming England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chairman Colin Graves has suggested that Pietersen may yet be able to resurrect his England career, having been frozen out of the national set-up a year ago. The South Africa-born batsman agreed a return to Surrey last week in a bid to enhance his chances of a recall, but Moores says that his entire focus is on the three-Test series in the Caribbean. “For me, Kevin’s not on this trip, so I don’t need to focus on Kevin at all,” Moores told a media conference at Gatwick Airport. “My focus is to support (captain) Alastair (Cook) as I always would and the 16 players on this tour. “At the end of that summer (2014) we’d gone through a tough summer, and started to play the sort of attacking cricket people like, and we like. That’s our focus at the moment. “From my point of view, Kevin isn’t on the radar. So he can’t be in my or Cooky’s focus at all.” (AFP)
Reddy to race in Formula 4
London: Young Indian driver Tarun Reddy will race in the all new MSA Formula 4 Championship to be held in the United Kingdom from this weekend. Reddy will join Double R Racing, team led by Anthony ‘Boyo’ Hieatt, for the FIA certified championship. The series will be contested over 30 races as the single-seater support series to the UK’s premier motorsport package, the British Touring Car Championship. It includes top British teams, Carlin motorsport and Fortec motorsport. Reddy, who missed crucial testing time due to exams, participated in 3 championships in 2014, including being crowned MRF 1600 Champion in India’s leading domestic single-seater series. He also participated in the Formula Renault Protyre championship in the UK, finishing on the podium thrice. Reddy is excited to get back behind the wheel of a race car and is cautiously optimistic heading into his first race this weekend. “While the other drivers have been pounding around the track getting more comfortable with the car, I have been stuck behind my books. Boyo has been instrumental in helping a lot of successful racers so am really looking forward to working with this team. The goal is to win from the get-go, and with the experience and resources the team holds I am sure this is very possible,” said Reddy. (PTI)
