TURA: The body of an unidentified youth was fished out of the Simsang river near Williamnagar on Saturday. Locals spotted the decomposed body afloat on the river at Baiza on the outskirts of Williamnagar town.
“Preliminary indication is that of a drowning case since there were no external injuries on the body,” said district police chief Davis Nestell R Marak.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports indicate the body could be that of one of the four kidnappers who jumped into the river at nearby Chisobibra while trying to shake off a police pursuit.
A gang of kidnappers had abducted a trader, Ajit Kundu, while he was returning home from his shop in Williamnagar last week.
When police gave chase to four members of the gang who came to collect the ransom money at Chisobibra during the beginning of the week the kidnappers jumped into the river and escaped.
The trader was subsequently released by his captors.
